The side hay dog 700141444 is the lateral feed tooth that keeps the crop mat square inside the feeder chamber of Massey Ferguson and Challenger large square balers. While the upper and lower dogs control the vertical grip, the side dog prevents the charge from drifting sideways, which is what produces the soft edges and uneven corner density that show up when bales are stacked.

A worn side dog lets the crop slide, so one side of the flake is lighter than the other and the finished bale leans or bulges. Inspecting all the feed dogs together is worth the few minutes it takes, because a rounded side tooth is often accompanied by a bent base mount and a stretched pivot pin in the same corner of the feeder.
